Alignment keeps selecting entire canvas?

or, as you can see with a group, the selected white squares of the alignment tool > even on the smaller sized layer (layer's name is "screenshot_xxx..)
   

I suspect that your smaller layer, is some how "at the image size", or this very layer is not selected/visible in the layer stack (it does not need to be selected though)
If you can provide a screen shot with the tool option and the layer stack with the group opened while using the alignment tool, we might not guess what's happening for long Wink

This might help you find out what happened https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-tool-align.html there are good tips as well, like using the modifier key "Shift" to select only the layers you want to align...
