Hello,

A playable character in a game was about to move so I took numerous screenshots then took the action then when I was about to save the file containing the screenshots, the power went out and I didn't have a Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) so couldn't do so. Now that the move is done, I cannot go back to retrieve the original data in-game.

I thought there might have been a temporary file for GIMP but I can't find anything large enough in %AppData%\GIMP\2.10 nor its sub-directories tmp nor backups.

Is there any way I can retrieve any version of the file I was working on? It doesn't need to be what it was when the power went out, it can be 2/3 - 1/2 (the earlier the less it contained).

Were you using Gimp capture to take the screenshots, some other application or Windows PrtSc capture\paste into Gimp?

I do not hold out much hope, Gimp holds the unsaved data files in memory.

I used Windows to take the screenshots (through Prt Sc key), then in GIMP I pasted from Windows buffer then made it into a new layer (ctrl-v, shift-ctrl-n).

Then it is one Gimp multi-layer file not saved, only in memory. Gone forever.

Considering that the lame Windows clipboard only holds a single entry, you should consider using a clipboard manager that will permit multiple entries, saving to disk as you go.

I ran a few test in a Win 10 VM and while those applications are comprehensive clipboard managers, neither is wonderful for use with Gimp. CopyQ just does not link and Ditto works but always asking for permissions.

For quick-n-dirty screenshots that are immediately written to file, so little chance of losing due to power failure, an old application, not updated for Win 10 but seems to work. http://www.bcheck.net/apps/purrint.htm - get the Win7 bugfix file

When set up like this to Save to file  https://i.imgur.com/HgoX0FL.jpg does what it says, PrtScr gets an imediate screenshot saved, no notifications. Load into Gimp as layers later.
