I have used Gimp on and off for a couple of years but still consider myself a beginner. I am constantly learning new things. In addition to clone and heal I use free select and gaussian blur.
With free select first I trace the area I want to replace. Then change to move and ctrl alt and drag the selection line to an area in the image that looks like it would be a good fit. Then copy. Then undo to move the selection line back to its original position and then paste. I did this image in three selections. Then follow up with clone and heal as necessary.
I use gaussian blur to blend in the edges. I trace the edge I want to blend and then select blur.
