The best way is to use Gimp to export your image from Gimp. I prefer JPG because they are a smaller file size than PNG usually. Gimp-Forum has a file size limit and I don't actually know what that is. I often upload images less then 500kb to here. If your image is way too big reduce it's height/width parameters and then reduce the JPG export quality.

Here is one I made previously:

At the bottom of your post see 'Attachments'. Then 'Browse' to your image, then 'Add Attachment'. From there I click 'Insert Into Post' and it puts it where your cursor is.
This is all good practice at using your file manager and adding images to the web. Generally on the WWW 'smaller is better' due to page loading which happens on your screen and not the server.

Max is 500 kb in size for JPG/PNG/GIF, (and 2 mega for zip/xcf, if I recall the later)
Sadly no WebP, I mean you can upload them, but it will become a link instead of a thumbnail.

Don't do PNG for your screenshot, especially when there is a real life picture inside GIMP, you will go easily over a mega, on the over hand if there is few colors only, PNG can do it.
JPG compressed (quality slider) at 85 should be good for any 1080p screen shot with around 300/350 kb size

Here an example, if I was above 90 on the quality slider I would have been over 500 kb
80 to 85 on a JPG quality is LARGELY enough to show what you need Wink
Click on the screenshot to open it at full size, you will discover that GIMP can give you an estimation of the size during the final export

PNG screenshots are fine (and better than Jpeg) if they don't include a photo (or are a zoomed-in closeup or part of the photo).

And yes, max size is 500KB for most image types, and 2MB for XCF.

Is your linux using X11 or Wayland windowing. I am not sure that Wayland works. It might help if you state the linux distro you use.

However some pointers. File -> Create -> Screenshot without  delay will take a shot of Gimp.
Until you have something working,  set up the dialogue for the whole screen.  If you do not want Gimp in the screenshot, set a delay.
Click on snap and minimise Gimp.

Gimp will take the shot and and un-minimise with the screenshot as the canvas. Merge the pointer if you want. Then you have to Save / Export yourself.

Back to your query about file size. For screenshots that are basically for information (not artwork ) I resize to 2/3 rds with a bit of sharpen then export as a 85 quality jpeg with sub-sampling 4:2:2
Edit: Just looking at what I normally use for screenshots. A simple linux utility screengrab.

After you click 'Snap' on the screenshot you get a cross cursor that you can use to select a region. That selection becomes a new canvas that you can save where you choose.

I never used the Gimp screenshot before but it's like the desktop screenshot I use. I used that one to take the Gimp Screenshot that you can't use to screenshot itself LoL. Smile
