Changing saturation levels in green channel

Hi everyone,
I am a new user of GIMP.
As you can see in the attached picture, I am trying to remove the overpowering green lines by changing the level of saturation for the green channel only.
When I try this using the Hue-saturation window and selecting the green channel, it work but also applies it to the red and blue so I lose the information from the other channels.
I need to modify the red also, but I have no idea how to achieve this.
Any suggestions on this would be much appreciated.

• You open the Channels tab, right click the Green channel, and Channel to selection. This creates a "soft" selection where pixels are selected in proportion to their Green content(*). An alternative is the "By Color select" tool and and set Select by: Green (instead of the default Select by: Composite) but this creates a "hard" selection.
  
• Then Colors > Hue-Chroma and reduce the Chroma
  

   

(*) The advantage of these soft/proportional selections is that they don't cause visible edges between changed areas and the rest.
