It all depends what the point of view is. If you are near the cylinder, the distance between your eye and the front (blue) is smaller that the distance between you eye and the sides (red), so things on the sides appear smaller. If you have a rectangle, this translates into a continuous curve.
This is the same effect as the "big nose" when you take a picture of someone being too close. The farther away you are less different are the distances, and the more rectangular the shape is, but you have to be pretty far way to not see too much difference(*). For you this means using a high Z value in the plugin.
(*) In thjs example, the bottle was shot from several meters away, using my big telephoto lens..
