For linux users, there are debs / rpms / flatpacks - no appimage but I did download the deb, unpack it, and it does run stand-alone and scans ok Using kubuntu 24.04 / Brother wireless printer/scanner. Not able to get the OCR to work, (it comes with a tesseract4), but that might be me. As an off-topic note, for Gimp xsane plugin, bit-the bullet, compiled it and that works. It finally reached version 1.0 after all these years.
I did go back and look at the OCR function. It does scan and export to a PDF with OCR'd text and it is very good. Uses the default font - which is Liberation-Sans for me - and the PDF is searchable. Still a graphic @ 100 ppi but searchable. Smaller than a Gimp PDF, larger than a pure text PDF such as you get from LibreOffice.
