Gimp version questions
#1
I have Gimp 2.9.6 std. (larger install file) .

  1. How is that version different than other one ?

  2. Where to download 2.9.8 std ?

  3. Where to put G'MIC in 2.9.8 release? In GIMP 2.9\share\gimp\2.0 there is no plugin folder.
  4. STD version doesn't have console pop up when GIMP is active. General version has it.

The features see: https://www.gimp.org/news/2017/12/12/gim...-released/

For windows the development version Gimp 2.9.8 is here:
https://download.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.9/...-setup.exe

Do not use the main installation for plugins. The place is the Gimp profile which for for Gimp 2.9 is
User\your-name\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.9
When it comes to gmic_gimp + Windows Gimp 2.9.8 - give me a little time and I will test. Probably the best way will be to install to somewhere simpler than appdata/roaming/GIMP2.9/ and set the path in Gimp preferences. I will see what works.

This version gives me console pop up when starting GIMP which can not be removed .
GIMP 2.9.6 STD version from https://www.partha.com/ doesn't have console pop-up. Could you tell Partha to make GIMP 2.9.8 STD version?

The console is normal for that development version. Just minimise it and ignore.

As for Partha, you will have to ask yourself but I am sure it is in hand, just wait until he irons out any Windows snags.

The gmic_gimp QT version does not work with the gimp.org Windows 2.9.8 Use the gmic_gimp GTK version.

My advice get the zipped version rather than the installer (.exe) http://gmic.eu/files/prerelease/gmic_gimp_gtk_win64.zip

Unzip that and put it somewhere easy to find. I put in my Windows User folder. Then add that to the Gimp Edit -> Preferences -> Plug-ins paths

Looks like this in action. https://i.imgur.com/omaB0hk.jpg

Difference clouds doesn't have settings UI in 2.9.8.

Most probably a bug, that is why Gimp 2.9.x is a development version.
The difference plugin calls the solid noise plugin for settings, but the solid noise plugin is upgraded to a GEGL plugin, while the difference plugin is existing old code.

You will have to do it manually, new layer in difference mode, apply the solid noise plugin to the new layer. The nice thing about GEGL filters is they work on the whole canvas. What you see is what you get.

edit: reported as a bug see: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=791788 If/when fixed, you will still have to wait for the next Windows release for a cure.

No search facility in gmic_gimp_gtk?
That is a decision that the gmic author made. No good complaining, the gtk version is living on borrowed time.

There is a work-around, a script that brings up the filters list from the gmic site.

The bug report is not promising Sad  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=791788

As a work-around, use the plugin from Gimp 2.8.x noise-solid.exe Put this in the Gimp 2.9 user profile plugins folder

C:\Users\your-name\Appdata\Roaming\GIMP\2.9\plug-ins

Attached to save you hunting for it. Remember to unzip it.

It does work and looks like this screenshot https://i.imgur.com/JHgm4Kk.jpg

The GEGL based solid-noise is still there and I think with the on-canvas rendering the manual option is still a good way to go. Up to you.

Thank you.

I also noticed that standard version Gimp 2.9.8/9 from https://www.partha.com/ is the best for Windows users but it loads slower than oficial GIMP 2.9.8
