Greetings,
I have a photo in jpeg format that has a resolution of 300dpi. When I open it in Gimp 2.10 and check the resolution by going to the Image menu and selecting either "Print Size" or "Scale Image" the resolution is listed as 72dpi.

Does Gimp downgrade the resolution when an image is opened?

To add to this, 72DPI is a default so when you see 72DPI you can almost always consider that the value is not set or has been lost.

So how do you know that you initial image is really 300DPI (what information in the file mentions this)?

Also IIRC some early releases of Gimp 2.10 would lose the print definition value, so if you are not on a recent version it could be useful to upgrade.
