The problem with gfig is it comes from Gimp 2.2 (actually Gimp 1 as a plugin) and has never been removed or really updated. Use it and be very careful, you can lose your work. Shapes in Gimp are usually added as a path and there are a few plugins for this. A path is good because it can be moved / strokes /fill as required.
If you want a plugin where you can visualize the shape on the canvas try this one.
