That script does not work in my linux Gimp 2.8.22 either, so it must be one of those dedicated to Windows things. 
Certainly in Linux Gimp 2.9.x ofn-tiles works. The only problem will be if the OP has any legacy .rcm files remaining and if ofn-tiles will join them together.
On the other hand, no reason not to have both Gimp 2.8.x and Gimp 2.9.x installed together.
