Still a little short of info on your procedures but as a guess, using a gradient in a layer mask something like this
To finalise the gradient in Gimp 2.10 you have to hit the ENTER or choose another tool . The effect will be seen in the layer mask.
An alternative if not using the gradient tool. Use Layer -> New from Visible Does what it says. Move the visible layer to the top of the stack before exporting.
