Well it is complicated, and for your purposes, make a mockup with as many layers as required. You do not want to be re-creating the same thing over-and-over-again. You can use this one as an example

(1) Group various aspects of a design in layer groups. (2) Toggle layer visibility on/off depending on final requirements (3) Keep an empty layer for your design, text layers will go above there as well. (4) Change the fabric colour as required. (5) Change the background colour or paste in a design.
It is just an example, make your own along those lines.

Any number of ways to separate a foreground and a background using Gimp. What you use very much depends on the background. Solid colours easy, patterns not so easy. Plenty of videos about this topic.
