How to save an indexed colormap? Recipe from http://gimpforums.com/ does not work!

Hi,

I am new to this forum; not new to Gimp, but have been using it mainly for resizing or converting photos to other formats. Now I want to do something more with my new Wacom graphic tablet.

I am using Gimp 2.8.18 on Debian 9.

My Problem:

I have a nice image (photograph), convert the mode to "indexed", see the corresponding colormap under Palettes in the palette dockable window. But I cannot find a way to save this new color map for use in other images. Searching my heart out in the net, I have come to this:

However, this does not work with me, I do not know how to name the new palette and how to save it. Can anybody help, please?

Why indexed? That reduces the maximum number of colours to 256

However, too many screenshots to put in-line/attach

1. Note the difference between the Palettes dock and the Colormap dock https://i.imgur.com/U0LNU8S.jpg and the very top of the Palettes list.

2. Convert to Indexed mode and you not only get a Colormap, you get a new temporary palette top of the list. Not much you can do with that but you can duplicate it https://i.imgur.com/wcJhG58.jpg

3. Hunt down the list, right-click (lots of right-clicking involved in Gimp ) to rename to something sensible. Note there are 256 colours. https://i.imgur.com/EZ7SvnJ.jpg

Edit: you can of course use this RGB method as well.

To get a palette from the original RGB image is different.

1. In the palettes dialogue, right click to import https://i.imgur.com/iF437h3.jpg

2. You get the 'Import' dialogue where you can select the image, and the number of colours https://i.imgur.com/qLPGDYU.jpg

3. Then again, hunt for that palette (Lenna-imported-5), right click, rename to something sensible, note the 500 colours in this one. https://i.imgur.com/QBZPIJX.jpg

worked, but strangely I got a palette of only shades of grey though the image definetly has more colors! However, miraculously there appeared now also a palette with more colors, I must have done previously (indexed) and had not noticed before. This palette stuff still is a  closed book to me.

Obviously I need much, much more practise   Now I lost my Tool Options from the Toolbox. Could recover Tool Options from Windows>Dockable Dialogues, but the Tool Options will not dock again to the Toolbox, try as I might. I searched Gimps Help, I googled, found recipes but nothing works as described. I remember that I could do it years ago, but I cannot remember how I did it

I am totally, totally frustrated

Maybe somebody looks here and could help with a working recipe for Gimp 2.8.18 on Linux?

Windows -> Dockable Dialogues -> Tool Options

That gets a tab alongside layers and things in the Dialogues.

Click on the tab and drag into the area that says You can drop dockable dialogs here

Thanks, of course I had done this. Nothing docked!  However, after having Gimp closed for some time and opening it again - voila it was docked.

Details: I deleted fhe folder ".gimp-2.8" in my home directory, logged out, restarted my computer, started Gimp, and the Dockable Dialogs had docked again. Since I had a backup of my customized color palettes, no problem.

Deleting the sessionrc in that directory is enough, that's where Gimp keeps the window positions.
