Is your linux using X11 or Wayland windowing. I am not sure that Wayland works. It might help if you state the linux distro you use.
However some pointers. File -> Create -> Screenshot without delay will take a shot of Gimp.
Until you have something working, set up the dialogue for the whole screen. If you do not want Gimp in the screenshot, set a delay.
Click on snap and minimise Gimp.
Gimp will take the shot and and un-minimise with the screenshot as the canvas. Merge the pointer if you want. Then you have to Save / Export yourself.
Back to your query about file size. For screenshots that are basically for information (not artwork ) I resize to 2/3 rds with a bit of sharpen then export as a 85 quality jpeg with sub-sampling 4:2:2
Edit: Just looking at what I normally use for screenshots. A simple linux utility screengrab.
