Why indexed? That reduces the maximum number of colours to 256
However, too many screenshots to put in-line/attach
1. Note the difference between the Palettes dock and the Colormap dock https://i.imgur.com/U0LNU8S.jpg and the very top of the Palettes list.
2. Convert to Indexed mode and you not only get a Colormap, you get a new temporary palette top of the list. Not much you can do with that but you can duplicate it https://i.imgur.com/wcJhG58.jpg
3. Hunt down the list, right-click (lots of right-clicking involved in Gimp
) to rename to something sensible. Note there are 256 colours. https://i.imgur.com/EZ7SvnJ.jpg
Edit: you can of course use this RGB method as well.

To get a palette from the original RGB image is different.
1. In the palettes dialogue, right click to import https://i.imgur.com/iF437h3.jpg
2. You get the 'Import' dialogue where you can select the image, and the number of colours https://i.imgur.com/qLPGDYU.jpg
3. Then again, hunt for that palette (Lenna-imported-5), right click, rename to something sensible, note the 500 colours in this one. https://i.imgur.com/QBZPIJX.jpg
