How to simply move selection
#1
I select a portion of my image. How can i move JUST that part? After I select, I click move and try to drag it but it drags the whole thing and the selection seems to just float and remain where it is. This is very counterintuitive.

Having made the selection you need to use Edit/Cut (or Copy), then Edit Paste, then select the move tool and move the newly pasted layer. (Ctrl-x etc work as shortcuts)

If you are using V2.10.xx then you will need to anchor the floating layer that is formed by the paste operation after you have moved it.

If you are using V3 then pasting creates a new (non-floating) layer and you don't need to anchor it.
