Question
    Hi All,

I am new to gimp and I am trying to learn it.  I have 2 seagulls, that I  have seperated  and want to combine, then  I want to be able to move them individually.  I want it to look like 2 seagulls flying together wing over wing.  I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me, as I am really new

You need to have each seagull on its own layer with a transparent background. For your image, the transparent background is easily obtained by using Colors > Color to Alpha and accept the default white.

Then select a layer in the layers dialogue and use the Move tool to move a layer.

In the attached xcf:
In the layers dialogue switch off layer visibility with the eye icon so that only one layer is visible at a time. See what each layer contains.

When you are happy with the positioning, SAVE as xcf (this will preserve the layers) and EXPORT as png or jpg (this will merge the layers).

Hi Blighty,
I am not sure how to put on separate layers, I put a box around the lower one, did copy, then hit add new layer and then pasted.  I can see the 2 layers. now how to I get them together where I can move each one into the spot that I want?  I am sorry but I am trying to learn so is you can explain the steps I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank  you in advance for your help.

Duplicate layer.
Paint away one seagull with a brush and white on each layer.
Put upper layer to 'Multiply'.
Move upper layer with the Move Tool.

1) Colors > Color to Alpha Accept default white.

2) Duplicate the layer.
(button at the bottom of the layers dialogue)

3) Select one of the two layers in the layers dialogue. Only this layer must be visible (eye icon in the layers dialogue). Use the Erase tool to erase one seagull.

4) Repeat 3) for the other layer.

5) Make both layers visible.

6) Add a new white layer
(button at the bottom of the layers dialogue)

7) Move the white layer to the bottom.
(button at the bottom of the layers dialogue)

What you now have should be the same as the xcf I posted earlier.

8) Select a seagull layer and use the Move tool to move it around.
