If you look at the gmic.org video you can just see the transform from a floating selection layer to a regular layer, using the new layer icon bottom of the layer dock. To be fair it is very quick. (between 46 and 51 seconds in the video)
You do not need to make a full layer, just make that floating selection a regular layer.
If you looked at my video you would see that instead of a Copy -> Paste I used a Copy -> Paste as -> New layer

Do you really need to use the curves tool? If not sure how Curves works do not use it. The gmic blend will adjust the colours to a certain extent it might be enough for your purpose.
