I've noticed that is true, more transparency = faster render.
I'm pretty sure Paigan0 found that alpha JPGs were faster to render than PNG:

He made the worlds first 8K fractal music video (7680X4320px). I don't have enough internet bandwidth to watch a video at that resolution.
Increasing the image size makes slower render times. PNGs are not the final product. I open them as layers in Gimp where I can do compositing tasks and output as AVI video with Gimp-GAP. Then it's a much more manageable size than thousands of PNGs.
Soon I will test the command on 1800 frames that are 1920X1080.
