OK, I tried this:
So, everything seems to work fine for me... and the problem isn't with Gimp but somewhere in your system (are you using a clipboard manager?)
- On my Linux, start a Win7 virtual machine
- On Firefox and Linux, go to the Wikipedia page mentioned above, swipe a selection on the Eastern Araboc numerals, and copy to the clipboard
- In Win7, start Word on a blank documents, and paste... It works
- In Word, remove the spaces between the characters (this allows me to make sure that what I will paste is indeed from Word (no spaces) and not the initial copy from Firefox (with spaces)
- Select the result and copy
- Paste in Notepad in Win7: works OK
- Paste in Notepad++ in Win7: works OK
- Paste in StickyNotes in Win7: works OK
- Paste in my Linux text editor (Kate): works OK
- Paste in Gimp text tool, to create a text layer in Win7: works OK
