What is best practice for exporting images so that they don't look so different from the GIMP view I see before exporting the image? Usually stick to PNGs and JPGs for exporting. I have to export equal to or below 80MB and I think less than 200 Megapixels.

Exported images look different in different browsers and screens etc.

Probably a color managed display issue. Some Browsers / Image viewers and Gimp can / might-not support color management.
This Devientart page in a chromium based browser (with color management) compared to Gimp with color management off. You can see a difference in some colors, typically blues and greens, red is duller as well. For Gimp see: https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-imagi...ement.html You can toggle color management on/off per image using Image -> Color Management -> Enable Color Management A bit on the old side, a browser check https://cameratico.com/tools/web-browser...ment-test/ , also local monitor settings particularly screen brightness can effect as well. If you are exporting for web display, stick with a sRGB profile, but there is nothing you can do about other peoples web brower / image viewer / monitor setup.
