I saw your post on GC.com There have been over the years the occasional Gimp script to add 'stars' to an image. Most do not work correctly with Gimp 2.10 but the attached is not too bad.
I liked your sky gradient, got the 'air glow' with the horizon.
Some things to look into in the future.
1. Use of layer masks to separate parts of an image.
2. You asked about layer modes, drop down list for combining a layer with the layer(s) underneath. Just experiment
The starry-sky script for you to play with. The usual unzip / pop in scripts folder
Example using that large 3440x1440 image you posted. Nice abstract shape.
