This is a good point worth emphasising. It also applies to old effects under the filters menu that don't have NDE capability. Have the gegl icons to the left on the filters menu, that indicate which are gegl, gone? I'm not seeing them but it may be my installation.
Actually it's the GTK3 desing guidelines, that in version 3, advise against icons in menus. So the GTK library doesn't show them by default, but strangely keeps the space for them on the left.
