Nothing is happening

Hi guys, sorry if my question is answered somewhere but I can't find the solution and I've encountered this problem twice on two separate machines. Re-booting and re-installing does nothing, it's as if once I encounter this problem, my computer refuses to work with GIMP anymore.

Anyway, to the problem. I use GIMP for Photo Editing, I just got GIMP installed on my newly delivered Windows 10  laptop. After a few hours, none of the tools in the color drop down will do anything. I encountered a similar problem about a year ago on a completely different machine, where nothing will seem to work. I can draw, it seems I can use the main tools on the left, but none of the tools I require work. I'm so fed up and tired of encountering this problem, a problem that literally nobody else on the internet seems to have encountered. So can someone please explain what is happening, because the last time this happened I gave up and didnt use GIMP on that machine again, I dont want to have to pay Adobe. The screenshot of what it looks like is attached, have a look at what's wrong.

Screenshot is a bit small. Did you try the check list?

I tried uploading a bigger one, it was apparently a too large file, if there's any tricks you know for reducing the file size without losing much detail please share. But nothing in GIMP as the image resizing tools in there also seem to not be working (this might sound dumb, but when I change the resolution in GIMP, that should change the file size right? Because that ain't happening).

I just had a look at the checklist, thanks for the link, the one that applies to me most is the one about color tools, however I'm pretty sure the image isn't indexed as there were photos I could edit before that I can no longer edit, I can't edit any new photos no matter where they're from. Also I found the Image > Mode menu, it shows RGB, not indexed. But I don't know if that actually shows whether the image is indexed or not.

I tried to find the Dynamics Setting referenced in your check list. Is this the one in Tool Options. Either way, I've now realised my Tool Options is only showing one thing: GEGL Operation. This doesnt seem normal to me, I've included a screenshot of the Tool Options box.

No, not right. The resolution is just a dormant value stored inside the image file. It does not affect file size. Bitmap images have sizes in pixels.

Best guess: Stuck in some GEGL operation. I can get similar to the screenshot by Tools -> GEGL Operation then closing the GEGL dialogue. Leaves the Tool Options as GEGL and no other tool selected. (but I can select another tool)

I would try first. Edit -> Preferences -> Tool Options and click on Reset Saved Tool Options to Default Values OK bottom of page, Restart Gimp.

Screenshots: (generally when you get the tools working )
Gimp has a built in screenshot function that will get you a good shot of the whole Gimp window. File -> Create - > Screenshot 

   


The whole window because showing the Tool Options and Layers dock plus Title bar, usually gives a clue to what is wrong.

   

Smaller size for sending to the forum? 
Scaling, Usually I scale down 2/3 rds but you have to look at the result. Is everything there and legible? If not, do not scale.
Exporting the screenshot. Other than for specific images JPEG produces a smaller file size than PNG.

This seems to have fixed it, thanks for all the advice (related to the problem or otherwise). This was incredibly frustrating to deal with so it's nice to not have it on my mind.
