You need to add transparency, an alpha channel to your image.
Use Layer -> Transparency -> Add Alpha Channel If that is greyed out there already is one.
The eraser tool will show the area erased, transparent area as checker board pattern, or the layer underneath if there is one.
No Alpha channel, then the eraser tool shows whatever colour is set as the Background colour.
hint for alpha channel, no-alpha layer name is bold with-alpha layer name is standard.
