Tool Preset Issue

I create a new pencil tool preset that is a simple 15 x 15 pixel square and save it as Square 15. I create another pencil preset tool that is a 25 x 25 pixel square and save it as Square 25. When I go to use the tools the Square 15 tool has changed to 25 x 25. Both tools are the same.

I've created tool presets in the past without issue. Is there some check box or preference or option I have failed to set?

Going through it very slowly. Plenty screenshots, so not in line.

As a starting point, I have an existing square brush but I do not have any presets. Might not be your situation in which case you can skip the first steps.

1. Using square brush set to size.
2. Click on Save Tool Preset...
3. That brings up the default preset editor dialogue.

4. Give it a name
5. Check the options you want
6. Save it.

7. Set brush to new size, click on New Tool Preset
8. You should have the default preset editor dialogue back

9. Repeat of earlier - give it a name
10. Set the options
11. Save it

If stuck, remember that the presets are text files, held in your Gimp profile and can be copied and edited in a suitable text editor. You can also delete any you do not want when you screw up

Each brush that you create has a native size, in your case 15x15 and 25x25. But lets say that the brush size in your tool options is set to 50. The brush size in the tool options does not change if you select a brush with a different native size, it will remain on 50.

In the tool options, next to the brush size, is a button to reset the brush size to the native size of the selected brush. Click that.

Rich, I am already doing exactly as you show. When I open the individual GTP files they are all the same. Only line for the name is different.

If I manually edit the brush sizes in text editor, the change to match brush size and aspect ratio of each other when I open Gimp. Running Gimp on another computer, each tool preset "keeps" it's native brush size and aspect ratio when opened.

Blighty, when clicking the button to reset to native size, they are all the same, they don't keep their original designed brush size. Whatever brush size was used last is what they all show as their native brush size.

The computer that it works correctly on is running Win XP. The one with issues is Win 7.

The Gimp install is the same for both computers.

The procedure works for me in a WinXP VM with Gimp 2.8.4 and a Win7 VM - Gimp 2.8.20
It is easy to get a duplicate preset, since that is done automatically. My guess - save new preset before changing the tool parameters (eg. size)

Just to confirm the procedure, a short video 3 mins. I put it in as a 'tip'

If you are not bothered about existing presets/tags in your Win7 installation. Try deleting the file tags.xml in your Gimp profile and the .gtp files in the presets folder.
Then start from fresh.

It is not a simple duplicate. I can create a dozen DIFFERENT presets each saved after creation and they are all unique when viewed in a text editor. Once I use ONE of them, they ALL change to become identical to the one used when I try to use them. After trying to use them they are the same when viewed in a text editor, only the line for the name is different. The act of using a preset alters it to make it like the first one used.

I have also deleted all existing presets and started over as you suggest. Makes no difference.

This is really baffling and frustrating.

Can't reproduce your problem on 2.8.20.

One thing to try:

• create/save the presets
  
• with your fil explorer, make the corresponding files read-only
  
• use the presets. Do they change?

Beats me, I can not replicate that. I case anyone has a theory, can you give the version of Gimp and if your problem Win7 is 32 bit or 64 bit.

I can't replicate it using 2.8.20 on Windows 7 64 bit

Why are you using GIMP 2.8.10 and not 2.8.20 ?
What is the exact name you are giving your presets?
Please explain step-by-step (leaving nothing out) your process
