XMP Metadata Missing!
#1
Using GIMP 2.10.x (x=2,4,6) on Windows 7 exported images contain NO xmp metadata.  This is true even though said metadata can be seen to be present using Image>Metadata>View Metadata.  Also, true even tough the Advanced Option indicating whether or not to export XMP metadata is checked.  Seems to be true for both tif and jpg exports.  At the same time GIMP 2.10.x seems to be doing a good job of preserving the EXIF metadata when photographic images are exported.

While GIMP has a reputation for handling metadata poorly it looks like GIMP 2.10.x has gotten better and is close to doing a good job of preserving the metadata contained in an original photograph, which is extremely desirable.

Having noticed that GIMP seems to have imported the questionable metadata from the image and allows it to be viewed it seems like retaining it in an exported image shouldn't be that difficult.

Various reports on this problem, at least it has eventually been added as a bug. see:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/1485

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/1746

Might not be as easy to fix as you hope.

I'm using GIMP 2.10.18/Linux Mint 20 and it is NOT exporting EXIF metadata, even though the editor itself can "View Metadata" with no problems. This is just saving jpg as jpg. And I doubled-checked my Preferences -> Image Import & Export -> Export Policies: they are all set correctly. I noticed this when I upload my jpg to sites like inaturalist and wikipedia; normally they can pick up the date of the pic from the metadata but now nothingSad

Since you are using linux you could try the latest Gimp 2.10.23 appimage. Changes made very-very recently on the exif code.

This is the same original from camera. Gimp 2.10.22 on the left 2.10.23 on the right. Same export settings, much more information saved including original dates.

Gimp 2.10.23: Lots of files here, 120 at the moment, under assets: https://github.com/aferrero2707/gimp-appimage/releases/

The one to try is https://github.com/aferrero2707/gimp-app...4.AppImage  Download, make executable, run. It makes its own Gimp profile ~/.config/GIMP-AppImage/2.10/ so you can still use your Gimp 2.10.18 for other things.

Thanks, found my problem. I don't know if this is a new "feature", but in the final step of the laborious 4-step process of save/export, I have to check "Export Exif data". I don't recall doing this in over a decade of using GIMP, but it seems once you check that box, it remains checked for future exports, so perhaps I have just become blind to this box until I got my new computer and a fresh GIMP. In any case there seems no reason for this box to be unchecked if I had set the export policies in my preferences. And by default the export policies are set to export everything, but in that final export step all the export boxes are unchecked by default. Huh?

I have the same problem with Metadata missing. When I open a .jpg file and I select View Metadata nothing is shown. It seems that all metadata is deleted by Gimp. As a result exporting the edited image with the exported image had lost all original metadata, although I have chosen to keep saving metada in exporting options both in Preferences and in the export dialog. What am I doing wrong?

Many metadata problems have been fixed in recent versions (2.10.22 or 2.10.24). Which version are your using?

I was using 2.10.24 when I found this problem. I learned later from a user with the same problem that 2.10.20 version causes no errors. Version 2.10.20 is what I am using now without any problem. But I would like to be using the latest version if I can solve the problem. Many thanks Ofnuts.
