Been trying a few things and as with most of these 'tutorials' the base image has been very carefully chosen. Get something more run-of-the-mill and not so easy.
The stumbling block I found is finding an equivalent to that PS watercolor filter. It is not actually rendering a watercoler in the tutorial but applying a degree of shading/hatching. Plenty of artistic effects in gmic but nothing I can find to give a decent effect.
The rest is very straight forward. An exercise in layer masking.
