Why will GIMP not read a jpg file ?

Note that if you run a flatpak version you can use additional allowed directories with the --filesystem option, something like

flatpak run --filesystem /media/ronald org.gimp.GIMP

see man flatpak-run for other ways to skirt some of the sandboxing.
