clean-up

Hello

This is my first post here, I'm a complete newbie to Gimp. I use it sometimes to "posterize" pictures I have taken with my digital camera. That's all  I do.

I was looking at a youtube video last week, the guy is restoring old machinery, and used GIMP to clean up a image he had scan. I would like to know HOW to do the same, can someone help me. I'm more of a garage guy than an artist

This is very short, and this is just the final click of a long process. He has extracted the markings to 3 layers (Ebene, Ebene#1, Ebene#3, and added a layer filled with the dial color (Ebene#2). In the video, he just makes the initial layer (the one with the scan of the dirty dial) invisible to reveal the clean markings over the clean dial, but he has likely sweated a bit to get there (there are two additional work layers at the bottom of the stack).

So, there are ways to clean, but it is often easier to make new markings from scratch, it depends a lot on what you start with.
