That could be the alpha channel on your layer/image.
If the image does not have an alpha channel and you erase then you get the background colour - which is often white.
If the image does have an alpha channel and you erase then you get transparency - which is represented by the chequer board pattern.
Right click on the layer and then select Add Alpha Channel. If it is greyed out you already have an alpha channel.
