How to get rid of the white line in the middle

Dear all,

I've been searching this forum for a way to get rid of the white line in the middle of the attached photo which is the result of stitching 2 scans together.
As I'm not entirely sure of the right terminology (I've used e.g. removal of crack/border/line) I wasn't able to figure it out yet. That's why I posted it in the general section.

Is there an option in GIMP that allows you to remove or enhance it in such a a way that it isn't visible anymore?

A quick correction with the healing and clone tool (need a little correction with the combination dodge & healing tool) :

With the resynthiser plugin

* Vertical selection, close to the white line on the left, a bit farther on the right to include the vertical dark line
* Filter > Enhance > Heal selection (Sample from sides, sample 10px)

If there is some overlap in the two scans it is possible to prevent the line in the merging process. Better than trying to correct it afterwards.

On the top layer add a layer mask, initialize to white.
Use a black to white gradient on the layer mask over the overlap.
