That was supposed to be a screenshot of the device status dialog box showing just the core pointer...
To attach images see here.
If you have a single device this means that Gimp doesn't see your stylus as a special device, it is lumped with all other pointers (mouse, trackpoint, trackpad...) into that "Core pointer" device that has no pressure sensitivity.
Look at the bottom of the Edit menu and open Input devices. You get a dialogue like this with a listing of all the devices. Choose the appropriate (1) and Mode(2) Pressure (3) Curve (4) and Save
Then you need to set a paint dynamic such as pressure-size or pressure-opacity
....but if none of the devices are showing, then maybe check the tablet driver software
EDIT: Give the development version a try https://www.gimp.org/downloads/devel/ it has better tablet support.
I tried both “Generic Windows Ink Pen Stylus” and “Microsoft HIDI2C Device Pen Stylus” but no improvement—still just dots at the start of an attempted stroke.
Went to Edit>Preferences>Input Controllers. Tried moving DirectX DirectInput to the active column then looked at the “Configure Input Controller” window. No device was listed, and no events were apparent after attempting a brush stroke.
I'll try Gimp 3.0

The stylus seems to be working well in Gimp 3.0. Thanks for the recommendation.
