I am a newbie to Gimp running Gimp 2.8 running High Sierra 10.13.4 When attempting to use the Healing or Clone tools right clicking
& holding down ctrl only brings up a file dialogue not the two circles described in the tutorial what am I doing wrong please ?

Not using OSX, but IIRC you should try to use "Command" instead of "Control".

Hello. I'm having the same issue. I'm using macOS Big Sur. When I click on Control, I get a dropdown box saying "file, edit, select, etc. Clicking else where does nothing. Clicking command does nothing. Any help very much appreciated.

Try ctrl  command+left mouse button (not right mouse button)
