Hi all,

Is there any way to sharpen the faces of all persons on the photo attached. If YES, please advise the detail steps how to do it.

Unless I have put values in, dont change from default
Load Photo into Gimp
Colours - Levels - auto input levels - while in there change the value top slider (move the centre arrow to the right so clamp is .70 (Darkens it a little and brings out more detail)
Duplicate your layer and desaturate it in luminance mode.
Go to Filters, enhance, highpass. 155.7 std dev and 1.962 contrast
Now put it in overlay mode and drop the opacity while in layers to 46. (Sharpens)
Merge your two layers.
Now using colours, shadows-highlights take the shadows up to 52.85 and the highlights down to -52.33.
Filters enhance - sharpen unsharp mask

You could also try a little burn Dodge

and convolve Blur

on the faces with a small brush. Burn to bring out the features more and convolve to sharpen them even more.

Just go to Filters > Enhance > Sharpen (Unsharp Mask)..., play with sliders to your liking also you can make a selection of the face before opening the filter.

What I tried as a simple and quick solution: select the faces (I did it with the 'Ellipse Select Tool') and copy the selection to a new layer (Edit / Paste As / New Layer in Place). Then set the layer mode to 'Multiply' and set the opacity of this layer to 50%.

Sorry, this is not totally related to Gimp, but I just couldn't resist, I had to run this with GFPGAN. For this low resolution, it might work.

Hi, I accessed the link you provided in an attempt to try this tool but I found it all very complex and I couldn't understand how to run this application;

Could you explain the steps on how to run/install this GFPGAN?

Does it work on Windows? Does it require extra files or does it work as a plugin?

Is there a website that already provides this service?

@inkdolls, I only made the faces that Stephin Liu asked. Doing the workflow without the selection, then the whole photo match. You can then correct the colors using the (automatic) levels or using the white, gray and black points levels. It is always difficult to fix small faces (not the group Wink

) because there is usually no graphical information about these areas in the photo and some filters just add noise to give the impression that the photo is sharper. That's why restoring faces using AI sometimes looks great, but the result is usually a look-alike person. Thanks for the GFPGAN link. Cool

Yes, you can run on any platform where Python runs, including WIndows. The extra files it needs are the trained models and you could say all the huge dependencies it requires. It's not a plugin, but some AI interfaces add it as an option to refine faces after image generation.

Yes, there are online demos, I guess you can find the same links that I can. The problem is sometimes there's a long queue and you get long delays, if anything at all. I used it extensively online when I first heard about it.

I can try to help if you really want to install it, but I'm sorry to say local installation is difficult if you haven't got some knowledge of Python and console commands. These are the instructions, but those will probably not make any sense to the casual user. It will take a lot of disk space and dealing with all the versions of all those Python extensions (and Python itself) can be a real chore.

There's also the option of running it on Google Colab, if you can't make a local install, but you need the knowledge anyway.

Yeah, too much information is lost, AI can't do any more than what the trained models provide, you'll hardly get any resemblance to the actual people from such a poor source.
