OK rich, I retried it, now ob-align.py is also working in gimp 2.10.18 on my PC. Thanks for the link to the old demo.

In general be wary of what you see over there. They did a poll a couple of years ago, asking people what their dream Gimp feature would be... It turned out that about half of them were already there in some form...

Filters > Light and shadow > Long Shadow... is another way of adding thickness to layer content

Usage example in conjonction with the 3d transform tool:
