That is true. I am comfortable with both methods. Currently, 2 admins have different favourites. No offence.

Not really, both point out the possibility ( probable ) case that an external hosting site can disappear or change its terms (free -> to subscription only -> to paid for -> to close down and vanish with all the images. )
Some formats are not supported by the forum software and there is no choice. Video files / webp images

So (and because I asked already? I don't recall), I did some searches, mybb has a bit of a problem with webp, BUT tada... I found a possible fix there (that fix is just from 2 months ago) ➤ https://github.com/AlekzNet/MyBB-WEBP-support

Yes, about time... requires me to upgrade the whole G-F.n (OS, PHP interpreter, etc...) but thinking about it.
