What is the "newly released GIMP book"  the ones I know are all ancient Wink

It is a German translation of a book which came out for GIMP 2.10 in 2019.... for German it is newly released... :-)

The plug-ins detailed at #3 of this thread automatically create masks based on certain criteria. The plug-ins were developed for my own use, with help from many people. Krikor was my most valuable critic during their development!
Also in the same link is https://gimplearn.net/download/file.php/eq-lum-mask-multi-py?id=35267&sid=69c88b191ec6cac24717cbb5c0d55e8f&desc=/eq-lum-mask-multi-py
This may be closer to what you require as it creates the masked layers according to the brightness of different regions. In the same link are notes on the use of these plug-ins.
