It's not you. GFIG is utterly broken... It definitely needs some love from a developer, or to be put out of its current misery.

Getting rid of the Gfig plug-in and making a gimp core functionality as a replacement is currently considers a future feature called shape tool : https://developer.gimp.org/core/roadmap/#future
