You new files look quite different from the previous ones.

AFAIK the selection doesn't come into play? if you want the mask to looks like a grayscale copy, there is already a Grayscale copy of layer init option for layer masks. Of course you can do a "Select by color" first and initialize the mask form the selection but the other option is better (because anti-aliasing pixels are a bit better handled.

Filing a bug isn't very useful if you cannot reproduce the problem, or aren't really sure how you it occured.
