I read, understood, but can't understand, because what I showed is what I always get when I create the L channel for this image.
Either manually, either using ofn-luminosity-masks or Saulgoode's LuminosityMasks.

Of course, your image has white on the left. But in the Curves tool (and Levels, and the Histogram display...) it is assumed that low values are on the left. Create your image with black->white instead of white->black.
