No layers saved in Gimp 3.0 from old svg/xcf files. - inspector - 01-31-2025

Greetings all,

I've used multiple versions of Gimp over the years, although I would not say I'm very good.  It's my first time using Gimp 3.0.0-RC2 (or any 3.0).  Currently running Suse Tumbleweed.

I have svg files created using older versions of gimp (from August of last year, unsure of the edition).  I successfully opened these files in 3.0 but all of my layers are gone.  It's compressed them into a single layer.   Same with xcf-1.0 and xcf 2.0 files.

Is there anything I can do besides going back to Gimp 2.0?

Apologies if this has already been asked and thanks for your help!

There are layers in Gimp and layers in SVG files (slightly different concepts behind each), but when Gimp opens SVG flles all it sees are paths, and AFAIK the SVG file is always loaded as a single layer, named after the SVG file.

However looking at your screenshot you loaded an XCF. I have been using Gimp 3.00 quite a lot lately and if there are layers in an XCF file, they are loaded as layers.

Another thing that is fishy in your screenshot is that the layer is in "Legacy" mode so the XCF must have been created with a quite ancient Gimp version.

Taking the post as "verbatim"

That is the bit I do not understand, "svg created using Gimp".  However, just in case, a multi-layer svg only opens in Gimp (2.10.38 or 3.0RC2) as a single layer.

I tried exporting (using Inkscape) in various formats that might open in Gimp, retaining layers - PDF and tiff - and these are also flattened.
Inkscape 1.4 can "Save-As" a Gimp .xcf and that works.

Since Gimp 3.0 is still a development version, I use a regular install for Gimp 2.10 and an appimage for Gimp 3.0  Maybe if you keep your Gimp 3.0 and add a Gimp 2.10 (flatpak or appimage) Have the best of both versions.

Edit: I do have an old Gimp 2.8.22 (appimage) that I can fire-up a .xcf file from there opens in Gimp 3.0
