what i need to do to hear that sound is to not move mouse or touch keyboard 10-15 seconds

gimp 2.8.14 with gimp_dark_v2 theme standard installation no additional plugins

here a the .xcf file with the strange sound:

below is syslog when i launch ghimp

RE: ghimp hdd strange sound - Ofnuts - 03-08-2018

Gimp uses the standard system interfaces for disk I/O.

All I hear is a faint rattling. Considering that the disk must be 4-5 years old at least it could be aging. I would recommend taking a peek at its SMART data (requires the smartmontools package) to assess its wear. And if it doesn't support SMART, it's not old, it's ancient...

if you will listen the file louder you will hear: metalic squeak

like: sq sq sq    sq    sq sq sq     sq sq

model of the hdd is old but i buy it 1-1,5 year ago it supports SMART

Is the file big enough to make Gimp create a tile cache, or make the system swap to disk? Otherwise 15 seconds after startup Gimp won't be doing any I/O...

file si not big, and it makes that sound always if not move mouse or touch keyboard if i work with that file it not make any sound

As I said above, it Gimp is basically idle it won't do any I/O, so your suspicion doesn't stand on very firm ground... Experiment:
  • start Gimp from a terminal
  • give the focus back to the terminal and wait for the noise to appear
  • in the terminal, enter CtrlZ to stop Gimp, does the noise disappear?
  • in the terminal, enter fg to restart Gimp, does the noise reappear?
  • you can alternate the stopped/running states  with CtrlZ/fg

RE: Strange sound in HDD with Gimp - rich2005 - 03-09-2018

Too much temptation with this one, Has the OP considered using WD40 Wink

My old notes say:

If the RAW figure for Reallocated Sector Count, Current Pending Sector Count, or Reallocation Event Count is higher than zero, then the drive is throwing up bad sectors. Replace it.

So it looks like the drive is OK.

Although the temperature looks dubious.

As a comparison my laptop:
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 24 (Min/Max 13/48)

I wonder if idle3-tools would make a difference?

Idle3-tools provides a linux/unix utility that can disable, get and set the value of the infamous idle3 timer found on recent Western Digital Hard Disk Drives......
....Unfortunately, the default timer setting is not perfect on linux/unix systems, including many NAS, and leads to a dramatic increase of the Load Cycle Count value (SMART attribute #193). With the default timer setting, the drive will spin down *every eight seconds* if idle and this may get the spindle motor to burn out in a few months or so.

i did the experiment and the results are following:

after starting the gimp from terminal and opening the .xcf file there was no sound (i just reinstalled debian) so i opened the same file twice with different file names so sound appear again

on the terminal window that was above i pres Ctrl Z and sound disappear  after few second in terminal i entered fg and hit enter and sound appear again

after played with Ctrl Z and fg few times i wright these message
so my experiment for you is download these .xcf file from here: http://www.filedropper.com/fonmascopie

or make one multilayered with normal and  inverted horizontally text also text must be with alfa to selection grow borders
make two copies with different name open both and wait in a silent room for 10-15 sec without pressing any keyboard or mouse button

conclusion: in my case strange metallic squeak repetitive sound is present

RE: Strange sound in HDD with Gimp - Ofnuts - 03-10-2018

Can't do you test, I only have a SSD, so if it emitted metallic noises (or any kind of noise for that matter) I would be very worried.

What make you think it's the HDD and not some ventirad?

Is your home directory on the SSD or on the HDD? If you can run without the HDD, have you tried to unmount it?

RE: Strange sound in HDD with Gimp - rich2005 - 03-10-2018

Seriously, what can that be other than the drive spinning up and down. Noisy fans - doubt it.

My laptop is SSD (+HD for storage) as well but I do still have a desktop, two drives.

Does your Debian installation have any utilities for monitoring disk activity.

This is PClinuxOS + a desktop widget.

That is root + home partitions. If the disk activity does not tail off, but cycles, in sync with the noise then look at that info I posted on WD drives.

The WD drive I have installed there is for data. SMART says the temperature is 25⁰C Your drive reports 66⁰C, that has to be a concern. Going to fail sooner rather than later.
