Custom brush nightmare - phil123456 - 04-05-2018
Hello,
I created my own bitmap brushes
but it only draws as black, cant get any color no matter which front/back color I choose
I use grayscale gbr files
also is there a way to change size automaticaly by selecting the brush, otherwise I always have to adjust the size when changing brush, really annoying for pixel art
what am I missing ?

I see a bit of editing going on while I prepared this, never mind, might help someone later.
Pixel Art? Are you working in an Indexed color space with a limited (black/ grays) colour map?
There is a way to use the mouse scroll wheel to adjust brush size. see: https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-using-variable-size-brush.html

Did you export as a grayscale, name.gbr otherwise the brush will not take the foreground colour.

The paint tool will affect the painted edge. Pencil is hard - no antialiasing. Paint brush has anti-aliasing and is smoother. Use the size slider to scale.

Just to add a little to what Rich said.
1) grayscale gbr is correct. Black will be foreground colour. White will be transparent.

Are you using the clipboard brush, by any chance? It doesn't seem to work (possibly because the clibboard is always RGB). Exporting a grayscale-mode image to GBR ought to work. Can you attach the brush here? (either as GBR or in a ZIP)
PS: The Reset button at the end of the Size slider in the Tool options resets the tool brush size to the native size of the brush.

ok, I made another try, and now I have colors, I guess the refresh button in the brushes editor in gimp does not do anything

Hey Rich,
Im trying to make a custom brush but when I go to import as a brush, this is the error message I get.
Saving 'C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp2.0\brusheslights.gbr
Error opening file “C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\brushes\lights.gbr”: Permission denied

You have an answer in another post but to tidy up here:
1. You can not export directly to C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\brushes
In Gimp it is read only.
If you desperately need it there, export to some other location and move it in using Windows explorer.
The correct location is C:\Users\"yourname"\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\brushes
2. That is one big canvas 1920x1280 that seems mostly empty. Crop it down before exporting as a bitmap brush or you will find it opening at that size for evermore.
3. The source image is RGB, which might be ok, the brush will be that colour. If you want a brush to use the foreground colour then convert the image to greyscale Image -> Mode -> Greyscale before exporting.
