Getting brush effects with mouse? - OurJud - 01-30-2017

Fairly new to the workings of GIMP. I'm usingĀ 2.8 with Paint Studio 2.0 addon and a bog-standard mouse.

I'd like to ask if there are any setting combinations (brush types, dynamics and paintbrush modes) that will create the brush stroke and paint effect of, for instance, oils.

What I'm looking for is a stroke which will take the colour from the brush as I paint, leaving a kind of smear or scraped effect at the end of the stroke.

I know this is possible when using a mouse, as a couple of the online paint programs I've used featureĀ just such an effect.

To be honest I'm not altogether sure how the various Dynamics work, because it doesn't seem to matter which I pick, all the strokes come out as simple, digital block strokes with no variation or texture.

Any help on getting different paint stroke effects will be very much appreciated.

Im no expert on this topic, but i think what you need is a dedicated brush.
There are animated brushes simulating different painting tools, you can download on the internet.
Here is an example:

Using a dynamic such as random angle can help to get variation, but i think dynamics and painting perform best with a pressure sensitive tablet.
Also adjusting the Spacing of the brush can give you variation.

Thanks for your help, Espermaschine.

After posting this question I went looking for information on the subject and found these - which seem to be the same kind of thing you've linked to - in other words brushes which just simulate the effect of brush strokes rather than you controlling it.

I've installed these but they're a bit tricky to use. You can't simply brush back and forth with them, or even brush in one direction as this results in a very obvious duplication of the texture, but if you use them like a stamp and vary the size, angle and type, it gives the desired effect.

Thanks again.

You need a proper brush, together with any Dynamics that used the "Fade" (which is the distance traveled by the cursor since you clicked down). You can set the Fade length in the Tool options.

You can, to some extent, also use the "Velocity" but this is hard to control with a mouse, since the big difference between mouse and tablet is that the cursor moves aren't proportional to the mouse moves .

Thank you, Ofnuts. I take it when you say 'proper brush' you're referring to a tablet and pen?

I'll have a play around with the fade settings, see what results.

Again, i have no real knowledge in this field, but isnt Krita the open source program for painting ?
According to wikipedia it has over 100 pre installed brushes.

No, I'm talking about the proper brush shape. The standard round brush doesn't work for this for instance....

Ah, I see. Thanks.

I don't recall coming across this during my searches, but I'll certainly take a look. Thanks.

[edit] I had seen this as it happens, but didn't realise it was free. Downloading now.

Just a few seconds playing around with Krita and I'm already very excited! Thanks for the link, Espermaschine.
