GIMP manual - Stephen Liu - 05-27-2018

Hi all,

Please advise;

1)
Where can I find GIMP instruction manual, describing the tool list and their function?

2)
The setting manual of GIMP, such as to increase the size of tool icons.

Thanks

Regards
SL

RE: GIMP manual - Espermaschine - 05-27-2018

First result in a google search for Gimp + Manual:

https://www.gimp.org/docs/

RE: GIMP manual - Ofnuts - 05-27-2018

To increase the size of the icons to have to change the "theme" (aka "skin"). See

Hi,

Thanks for your help.

Before posting I have had searching on Internet without result.  Actually what I need are basic information of GIMP

1) Tool list on the screen and their basic function rather than moving mouse cursor over them to read
2) How to increase the size of the tool icons ?
3) What are the tiny icons on the right menu under 2.Hardness 050 (51x51) ?

What I found on Internet were the application of GIMP including Youtube video.  I found many of them.

SL

Thanks for your help.

After reading your link briefly It seems not so easy to increase the size of the tool icons just with a few clicks.  It has to extract the files provided on the links on #1.

On;
Edit -> Preferences -> Theme

It is an empty folder

It is quite strange to me?  I'm running GIMP 2.8 here

RE: GIMP manual - Ofnuts - 05-27-2018

Gimp is a GTK application. As such many characteristics of the GUI are customized via a gtkrc file (fonts, colors, and some behavior when applicable), while icons/images are provided separately. In short, gtkrc+icons=theme.

Then you are on a Unix machine which is potentially used by several people (at the same time or sequentially). So there are parts of the Gimp setup that are available to all (in /usr) and parts that are specific to your userid (in your Gimp profile: ~/.gimp-2.8/). So the theme can be in either (if adding new themes, best put them in your Gimp profile, so that your backups take them in account).

Hi

Thanks for your advice.

I'm the sole user of this PC which runs Ubuntu 16.04 as OS.

I have poked around on the file /usr/share/gimp/2.0/themes/Default/gtkrc
Is there any way changing/amending its content to increase the size of tool icons?  The said file is attached to this posting.

Thanks in advance.

Go to this thread: https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-GIMP-2-8-Large-size-Icons-Themes

and download one of the 48x48 themes. These are 7zip archives which open in Arc like this

Drag the whole folder into ~/.gimp-2.8/themes

Start Gimp 2.8 Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Themes select the theme you just installed

Looks like this: Toolbox icons will be larger, tabs larger but not everything, like brush icons.

Dock icons can be adjusted using that little left pointing arrow and the drop down menu.

Hi,

Please advise where can I find the said arrow.  My Preferences here looks different to yours

I have upload the screenshot of tools here.

Thanks

Edit:

Just installed GIMP 2.10 on Ubuntu 16.04 VM (guest of Oracle VirtualBox).  Still the Tools menu looks different to yours.  Please refers to upload file:- screenshot_gimp2.10.png

RE: GIMP manual - rich2005 - 05-28-2018

Here are your screenshots with the configure tabs arrows marked
https://i.imgur.com/kX5tUGf.jpg and https://i.imgur.com/pRwVUT4.jpg

See the Gimp docks: https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-concepts-docks.html

Why does my Gimp interface not look like the default. For Gimp 2.10 I change the theme and the icon theme and size as: https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Gimp-2-10-0-icon-size?pid=7901#pid7901

For Gimp 2.10 Go into Edit -> Preferences -> Interface -> Theme / Icon Theme for settings

Hi,

Let me treat GIMP 2.10 first because GIMP 2.8 is running on the Host of this Virtual Machine.  I'll treat GIMP 2.8 on another PC latter.

GIMP 2.10
Now I found "Previous Size" tab.  Please refer to;
screenshot_1_gimp2.10.png
screenshot_2_gimp2.10.png
screenshot_3_gimp2.10.png

Comparing;
screenshot_1_gimp2.10.png
and
screenshot_3_gimp2.10.png

It looks to me that on the screen there is not much difference between "Medium" size icon and "Exlarge" size icon.

I have "quit" and restarted GIMP.
