I think the plot has gone a bit there.

Would it not be better is the grain of the wood followed the contours of the statue, at least to a certain extent.

I think what is needed here is a better (and bigger !) woodtexture and i used a displacement map (just 10px for the x-axis on a 1680x2240 image).
The original image in Hard Light Mode on top of the texture.

I got a PM from a fellow forumer, asking if there is a tutorial for the effect i posted.

There is no tutorial, i just understand the tools and i already gave away all the techniques involved.

You render the little guy, find a good texture, then apply a displacement on the wood texture, using the figure as the displacement map. That makes the wood follow the shape of the sculpture a bit.
Then you use the rendered image in Hard Light mode on top of the wood to get highlights and shadows, adjusting the image with curves.
A medium gray is invisible in Hard Light mode, something you can use to your advantage when adjusting the image with curves, so you only get lights and shadow and no further darkening of the mids.

Gimper, I know wooden roses aren't reality but I just had to try it.  I also tried Espermaschine's  method of displacement map.  I had only done 2 tutorials in the past with displacement and really needed practice at it again!  Here is my humble post.
