How do I make a background transparent? - chrisj - 02-23-2017

I have an image with a white background.
How do I make it a transparent background?

Add a new transparent layer and delete the white layer, or add an alpha channel (= transparency) and erase.

1. Make sure your image has an alpha channel. Right click on the layer in the layers dialogue and select Add Alpha Channel. (If it is greyed out you already have an alpha channel.

2. Use the Fuzzy Select tool and click on the white background. If necessary, in the Tool Options put the Mode into Add To Current Selection and click on more of the background.

3. Once you have selected the white background press the Delete key to clear the white background.

4. You will quite likely be left with a white halo. To get rid of this do (Select > Grow) by 1 (or maybe 2).

5. Do (Colours > Colour To Alpha) and accept the default white.

Select all (Ctrl + A), hit delete, profit.
