How to install Help - DoctorBill - 04-10-2017 I just migrated to Windows 7 against my will and lost older programs that worked on XP (PhotoShop LT). I downloaded and am trying to learn GIMP ! GIMP's "Help" doesn't work, so I found a link to GIMP HELP (English) on GIMP Downloads. I downloaded the Help Setup Program and when I ran it, it ask WHERE to set up the Help. When I enter GIMPSHOP (in my Programs Directory), it says GIMP isn't there ! When I enter .....users/pc/.gimp-2.8, it says GIMP isn't there either ! Where do I tell the installer to put the Help Files ? DoctorBill (I am a 74 years old retired Chemist PhD) RE: How to install Help - Ofnuts - 04-10-2017 If you installed GimpShop you installed an incompatible version of Gimp. And you likely added some malware to your computer, because if GimpShop was initially an effort to make Gimp look like Photoshop, it is now mostly a "honeypot". The two good places to obtain Gimp are:
RE: How to install Help - DoctorBill - 04-10-2017 " If you are a beginner, stick to 2.8. " - OFNUTS My GIMP seems to have been installed in C:/GimpShop/bin/gimp-2.8 subdirectory - (5,127 KB) Application. I have installed 2.8.0 on my win 7 computer from GIMP Downloads - PhotoShop has nothing to do with it ! I merely said I had been using PhotoShop under XP on my old computer - now I can't use it. Everything is as it should be - apparently ! Where does it usually install to ? I have watched the video on getting GIMP to recognize the English Help File (GB) http://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Gimp-Installation Installing Help and entered English [en_GB] in the user Interface. The Help files were installed w/o modification where it normally installs, on C:/program files/GIMP 2 GIMP still says the "User Manuals are not installed locally" ! How does one get GIMP to know the Help Files are installed locally ? What is "locally" to GIMP ? RE: How to install Help - Ofnuts - 04-10-2017 So where does that "GimpShop" name comes from? AFAIK, on Windows, Gimp usually installs in "C:\Program Files\GIMP2". "Locally" means "on your computer" (on the standard installation it gets the help from the web). Did you get your help installer from here: https://download.gimp.org/mirror/pub/gimp/help/windows/2.8/2.8.2/ RE: How to install Help - rich2005 - 04-10-2017 Read that line again Quote:...GimpShop was initially an effort to make Gimp look like Photoshop, it is now mostly a "honeypot"... The original GimpShop, from memory, was Gimp 2.4 and just provided some icons and plugins to make a semblance of a PS interface. Never a good idea. The web-site that now offers GimpShop has hijacked the name and provides a small 'loader' which downloads a old 32 bit version of Gimp 2.8.0 (we are up to 2.8.20 for the official version) and all sorts of adware. So steer clear of it. My advice, get rid of that version, You should find it in C:\Program Files\GIMP 2 but it might be in C:\Program Files (x86)\GIMP 2 Whichever it is, just delete that folder and all the sub-folders with it. Get the official version from http://www.gimp.org The big button that says Download 2.8.20 It is a big download because it contains both 32 and 64 bit versions. The installer will install the correct version for your Windows 7. Have a look at the video on installation http://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Gimp-Installation although showing Win10 it is exactly the same for Win7 and has a few tips. Gimp Help. You are in the USA the version of help needed is the plain 'en' version - the 2.8.2 does not refer to Gimp, it is the help version and is the most recent. https://download.gimp.org/mirror/pub/gimp/help/windows/2.8/2.8.2/gimp-help-2-2.8.2-en-setup.exe 24 MB. That should install and show with no problems but if you have any please come back with your reports. RE: How to install Help - DoctorBill - 04-10-2017 Alright - I guess I used one of the "Outlaw" web sites to get going on "GIMP".... How is one to know ? I have taken your advice and used Win 7 'Remove' to get rid of ALL "GIMP" stuff. I will now go to the sites you have given me and try again. Thank you for the Help...... Edited later - Downloaded from the .org site ans watched the Video....installing now. Edited after above - seems to have worked fine.....now going for the Help Files as you recommended...... Further Edited - Downloaded and installed Help file you gave me - UP AND RUNNING ! I appear to be all ready to edit picture files ! THANK YOU Fellows ! ! ! ! ! DoctorBill PS - I will now go to the Forum to ask questions about 'Editing' should I have any (lol) !
